WORKSHOP

Vectors' management: basics on mapping and statistical analysis

Workshop description

Mosquitoes vector of diseases, especially in tropical countries such as Cabo Verde, are important threats to public health. For this purpose, their analysis from a statistical and spatial point of view, within the context of medical entomology, is vital to address the great risk posed by parasitic (malaria, dirofilariasis, etc.) and viral (dengue, Zika, etc.) diseases at the national level.

This workshop is addressed to both health personnel and researchers, developing the necessary concepts for the construction of a basic descriptive and inferential analysis on the management of the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti in an urban context such as is the city of Praia. The course does not require previous experience in statistical or spatial data analysis, aiming to understand the basic processing and cleaning of data for the construction of our own heat map of Ae. aegypti, as well as learning to interpret the results of a simple inferential analysis.

Tools for the workshop

For this workshop, it is recommended that attendees install the free QGIS software version 3.36 (https://qgis.org/es/site/forusers/download.html), as well as the office suite program Microsoft Excel (free online platform version*), or its free alternative, Libre Office Calc (https://es.libreoffice.org/descarga/libreoffice/) prior to the development of the course, as this will not be addressed during the session.

* It is possible to use the Excel Online online-platform, free of charge. This is the recommended option for the development of this course before the Libre Office Calc alternative.

Languages

The course will be taught in English and/or Spanish.

The Instructors

Juan Pablo Orán Cáceres

Juan Pablo Orán Cáceres is a Geographer with specialization in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing. His career has focused on the development of projects that apply these technologies for a variety of purposes. Currently, his work is concentrated in the field of Public Health, working specifically in the detection and management of urban pests using GIS tools. His experience and knowledge allow him to provide effective and quality solutions for the management and analysis of spatial data.

Marcos López-de-Felipe Escudero

Marcos López-de-Felipe Escudero is an Entomologist specialized in disease vectors and other urban pests. Within the context of the management of hematophagous diptera of public health interest, he has focused mainly on mosquito vectors, urban and rural, as well as simulidae or black flies, and phlebotomine sand flies, vectors of leishmaniosis. He has experience in the analysis and statistical processing of data applied to the concept of disease vector management.
